The Mother Letters

After his wife Amber had given birth to three boys in three years, Seth Haines saw that she needed encouragement in the day-to-day drama and details of motherhood. Secretly collecting nearly six hundred wise, honest, and sometimes hilarious letters from other mothers across the world, Seth compiled these “mother letters” as a gift for her. Amber and Seth have chosen the best of those letters—including letters from some of the most in uential writers and bloggers online today—to include in a beautiful book perfect for the mother in your life.

Each mother-to-mother letter offers encouragement, advice, and vulnerable honesty about the struggles and joys of motherhood. These letters show that no matter how many times mothers feel like they’ve failed, they are still doing their greatest work. So for the mom who thinks she’s the only one out there who just can’t find time for a shower, Mother Letters shows her that she’s part of a grand and diverse group of strong women who are saying to her, “Me too. But we can do this.”

Spread the Word

Share Your Letter

When Seth gave Amber this thick book of letters, each one meant something mysterious and wonderful. Every voice of encouragement is an important one, so if you have something to share with other moms about your journey (your gains, your losses, your mishaps and victories), then please do write your own Mother Letter.

Begin with “Dear Mother,” and write a blog post or share on instagram. Link to this page, and don’t forget to add your permalink here so we can find you. If I can see the wisdom and beauty in you, I’m more likely to see it in myself. When I know you’re story, I learn grace and patience. Thank you for sharing in the laughter, joy, struggles, and hope.

Gift Mother Letters

The Mother Letters will be a book to keep at hand for mothers in many different stages of the journey. Especially new mothers will love each short letter, sometimes to hear the truth – to keep going, sometimes to laugh, and sometimes just to know she isn’t the only one who feels how she does. For baby shower gifts, Mother’s Day, and to have on hand when your mom friends need encouragement, The Mother Letters will be a kind relief and a beautiful reminder of how important this work called motherhood really is.

A Heart for Mothers

We want to encourage mothers across the globe to continue on this motherhood journey with confidence. This is why it’s important that we join to support Mercy House Kenya, whose young mothers need to hear, like the rest of us, that they aren’t alone. While receiving prenatal and postnatal care, these women are seeking education, freedom, safety, and dignity. Please join us in supporting Rehema House through Mercy House Kenya who empowers these women by offering exactly what we’re all looking for. Let’s give hope and sisterhood just as we have received it and partner with them!

About the Author

Amber Haines, author of Wild in the Hollow, has 4 sons, theRunaMuck, and guitar-playing husband, Seth Haines. She’s an Alabama girl who’s found home in Arkansas. She loves the funky, the lyrical narrative, and the dirty South. She finds community among the broken.

Amber is contributor at (In)courage and The High Calling, and former contributor to A Deeper Story. Once upon a time she was a student of Poetry in an MFA program, but the desire for children won over words and she had 3 boys in 3 years after that.

After a canceled adoption and going in deep with her community, the Haines family added their 4th BOY to their story. His name is Titus, a boy of strong heart whose poor health taught them more than any good health could.

Amber Haines writes about mothering many boys and keeping faith from the perspective of a Christian woman who’s had an abortion and an affair. She loves to tell a story, to speak and write about the church and the power of weakness and forgiveness.

She hopes to encourage you in your creative endeavor and spiritual giftings, in your pursuit of the Kingdom of God, and in your weakness. She believes the people of Christ’s church are to be agents of healing and reconciliation. It was brokenness that taught her so, and she’s still learning.
