a kitchen in a rock house
Okay, so here’s the reveal on The Rock House’s Kitchen:
This breakfast area next to the back door is where we do all our everyday eating. It’s right where Grandma and Grandpa sat to watch the birds and eat tuna fish sandwiches and squirt taco bell hot sauce on things like hamburgers. We have our bird feeders in the exact place they did, and we get excited how they did, too. Look! There’s a titmouse! That has nothing to do with kitchens, I know.
The floors are linoleum. They totally look like wood and were a comparably inexpensive makeover!
I can thank Emily at Chatting at the Sky for the black cabinet idea. Oh, I love that Emily. The grey/blue color on the walls is Sherwin Williams Oyster Bay. I like it – a lot. (Can you hear my Forest Gump accent?)
See how the cookbooks go in the old microwave hole? That’s also where I hook up my little iPod for some tunes. I can’t do much kitchen work without shaking what my Mama gave. It’s always for Jesus, people.
The backsplash is black chalkboard paint, and I have a quote from one of my favorite Mary Oliver poems written there so far. Oh, I love that Mary Oliver.
I’m not showing the little corner with the fridge and oven/stove/microwave. It looks great, but it just isn’t that exciting.
Here are two sneak peeks into the dining room. I’ll tell you more about the colors and such when I give you the full reveal. I’m just not finished yet.
Above the painted brick fireplace is an old screen door turned mirror and some of my white dishes and vases.
What’s your favorite thing about your kitchen
– besides all the eating that goes on?

June 28, 2009Good idea on the backsplash. I'm lucky enough to have a tile backsplash, but I hate it. It's very beige and boring. I love the lavender paint that goes with my black granite. And I like my red table. But mostly I love my flowery measuring cups.

June 29, 2009WOW! Everything looks lovely! I adore all the colors and the cabinets and the chalkboard back splash. So creative! I also really like the use of the microwave hole to hold cookbooks...clever!
These are definitely an inspiration to the decorating we'll be doing at my mom's house.:]
My favorite thing about our kitchen is when our centerpiece on the table consists of a handful of white or yellow (or a mixture of!) daisies.

June 29, 2009I love it...especially the chalkboard backsplash. The favorite things about my kitchen....the Mexican tile floors, the view from the windows over the sink, and my tin-punched copper backsplash over the stove.

June 29, 2009And oh I love that Amber. That kitchen is totally and completely YOU. Love the chalkboard back splash.
And I have to confess my favorite thing about my kitchen is the laptop that sits on the island, which on particularly grand but rainy days like today, gives me a window into sunnier places....such as Amber's kitchen!

June 29, 2009Hey Honey! It's great. You always do such a good job. I love the way the 'eat-in' area looks. no clutter, very neat. What's between the kitchen and the dining area you see through the door?
Amber
June 29, 2009Yawl, I can't claim the backsplash idea, either. My girlfriend, Leslie, suggested it, and I have high hopes for what I'll write there.
Thanks for encouraging me so much.
Hey, Mama! (Tina Carothers is my Mama.) Okay, do you remember where Grandma Haines kept her dining room table and china cabinet? That's where the piano is now, and otherwise it's just simple, open space. We have our dining room table where Grandma's living room was, right about where the coffee table was in front of the couch. I love that room because it makes the house seem so big when, you know, it's not at all very big.

June 30, 2009Amber,
I'm so glad you posted pics. You have great taste, and some creative ideas! I love the color combinations and how everything is uncluttered and clean looking! Enjoy!!
I love my kitchen because it is spacious and has lots of counter space. I love making meals for people we have over, and letting them help prepare them, if they want.

September 3, 2009At the risk of sounding silly, and maybe redundant, I love reading at this home of yours, and you just make me smile- shaking what your mama gave you for Jesus. :) I guess that what I'm trying to say is that I know this is your 'home', but I just feel like I'm at home here, too.

June 16, 2015Chalkboard! That's the best thing I love in a kitchen. I think I just love the idea of writing anything that you want to write in your kitchen. A reminder, a menu, whatsoever. I love that.
