a Mama party {WFMW style}

I thought a lot about the sister connections I’ve made through blogging when I wrote a Kumbaya for Sisterhood, and in writing that post, I realized how long it had been that I had made true connections with my surrounding in-the-flesh sisters. I spend so much of my time in this strange bloggy world and so little of it on the friends who have rubbed my back while birthing a baby or who have put their loving hands on me in prayer over issues about which I could never write. What we do on our blogs needs to translate into real life.

So this is what I did – I had a Works For Me Wednesday Party, inviting the mommy friends in my life who might need the same sort of encouragement that I do. We brought a half a recipe of our favorite dessert and then something to encourage the other moms: easiest recipe, a favorite verse, a big ol’ hug, just whatever.

Think about the area where you could use some encouragement and then invite other friends who could use encouragement in the same. I really am craving a party with my artsy friends, too, to have them perform their poetry, bring their paintings, or play us a song. Doesn’t that sound so good and engaging?

That’s what the Mama Party was, too – engaging. We engaged each other and we engaged God. One girl shared some truth that hit right at the core of my bad temper, and another girl listened so patiently as I spilled the beans about some of my forgiveness issues.

At the end we prayed, and it was affirming, and convicting, and restoringexactly the encouragement I needed. The candles kept burning, and the brownies kept enticing as I sat with a friend, hearing more of her story, reading her my new favorite chapter, reshaping a bit more into Imago Dei.

She explained to me how she learned that nothing is ours, that giving should come as easily as breathing, and I think it changed my life forever.

It’s worth it, hosting a party. So invite people into your mess, and I think you’ll find that it really works for you.

Absolutely beautiful. A resounding Amen...It makes my heart smile to see women encouraging one another.

Thank you for reminding me of my need to send invites to the 'mess' show. :)

What a fantastic idea!

Awesome tip and great reminder. In fact, the blog world imitated real life at first, not the other way around, right? :-) Blessings!

What a totally awesome idea. And your group is HUGE. You are very blessed. (Which I know you know. But ... you know.)

Great post and idea for a party! Looks like so much fun. That video from your friend, "99 Balloons" has affected me deeply. Thank you for sharing it.

First, a genius idea. Second, I'm a teensy bit jealous. I'd give anything to collect my dearest, deepest friends in one living room and share real life encouragement. But most of my close friends are scattered across the country (and the world). I agree with Kelly. You are so very blessed!

    I really am blessed. I met my best friend the first day I moved to this town, BUT! some of the girls at that party I didn't know from Adam's house cat.

    I just had my friends to bring their friends - just moms. It's not limited to people we know.
